Creator story
In 1953, a year before her death, Kahlo's first solo exhibition in Mexico opened in Mexico City. Her doctors forbade her to get up, so she arrived by ambulance: her four-poster bed had been carried into the gallery in advance, and she received visitors lying in it, surrounded by her own paintings.

Frida Kahlo was born in 1907 in Coyoacán, on the edge of Mexico City, and died there in 1954 at the age of 47. Almost all of her painting dates from the 1930s to the early 1950s.
She made her own body and biography the central subject of painting, fusing the language of Mexican votive retablos - small scale, sheet metal, blunt storytelling - with modernist form.
The Two Fridas (1939), the double self-portrait she painted the year she divorced Diego Rivera. It hangs in the Museo de Arte Moderno in Mexico City.
In September 1925 the bus she was riding collided with a streetcar and a metal handrail pierced her pelvis. She took up painting during the long recovery, working from bed with a special easel and a mirror fitted into the canopy above her.
