Russian Realism
Ilya Repin was the foremost painter of Russian Realism and a member of the Peredvizhniki (The Wanderers). His Barge Haulers on the Volga depicted the backbreaking labour of ordinary people with near-documentary honesty and made the 26-year-old artist famous across Russia.
Repin set the standard for socially engaged Realism for a whole generation of Russian painters and remains one of the most revered figures in the history of Russian art.
Creator story
Repin studied real barge haulers on the Volga over three summer seasons, achieving portrait-level accuracy for every face in the crew — the collective image of gruelling labour is built from eleven distinct, individually recognisable people.
