Creator story
In roughly ten working years Van Gogh produced about 2,100 works, some 860 of them oil paintings. In his final 70 days at Auvers-sur-Oise he painted around 70 canvases, close to one a day, while still selling almost nothing during his lifetime.

Vincent van Gogh was born on 30 March 1853 in Zundert, the Netherlands, and died on 29 July 1890 at Auvers-sur-Oise in France, aged 37. He worked as a painter for only about the last ten years of that short life.
Van Gogh made colour and brushstroke carriers of feeling: his paint describes an object far less than it registers a state of mind. That shift led Post-Impressionism towards the Expressionist painting of the twentieth century.
His best-known work is The Starry Night (1889), painted while he was a patient at the Saint-Paul asylum near Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. It now hangs in the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
He painted the Sunflowers series in Arles in 1888 to decorate the room prepared for Paul Gauguin in the Yellow House. Their life together there lasted just nine weeks before it collapsed.
