His name simply means the Greek; born Doménikos Theotokópoulos on Crete, he signed his works in Greek all his life.

El Greco
El Greco (1541–1614) was a Greek-born master who became the great visionary of the Spanish Renaissance. His elongated figures, electric colour and spiritual intensity were centuries ahead of their time.
Long dismissed as eccentric, El Greco was rediscovered around 1900 and hailed as a forerunner of Expressionism and modern art.
